Through the years, HSBC has gained a reputation with its customers--both internal and external--as a place where rules matter. There is a way of doing everything. Everything has a modus operandi. In any other organization, such an emphasis on compliance would be a bottleneck to growth, but not so in HSBC. Here you don't have to look far for anything, and employees are consistently encouraged to apply their own judgment on how to make existing systems more efficient---without compromising anything. HSBC doesn't promise to catapult you overnight. But what it does promise is that you can really make it big here if you stick your neck out. You won't be taken for granted. And the journey will never be dull.

The fact that HSBC had never had Management Trainees before us gave us a lot of room to experiment and grow. At the time, the Bank was still small and many of the core departments were in the process of building their teams, offering a unique opportunity for us to grab our spots and be assimilated into the organization a lot faster than MTs at other organizations. If I had to name the most critical success factors driving my growth at HSBC they would be my critical mind always challenging the status quo, the space my managers gave me to explore opportunities, and the accessibility of even some of the busiest people in the bank any time I’ve needed to bounce ideas around.

The culture at HSBC generally facilitates learning, although initiative is required if one has to learn and progress. Carrying forth the learning in one department to the next builds up the experience curve and contributes to the notion of thinking ‘Joined up’. Assignments during rotations vary between being a breeze to challenging. The program ends up providing a good analysis of where one’s strengths lie and highlights areas where one can improve upon. The idea behind such a comprehensive MT program is to provide the trainees with a holistic view of banking.

After the initial six week classroom training, came the rigorous rotations which made me get a feel of each area of the bank be it corporate banking, personal banking or operations. And finally came the much awaited placement.
I have been with HSBC for the past eighteen months and till now my experience with the world's local bank has been excellent. There are many opportunities where you can experience new assignments and challenges. I love working with my co-workers who are a group of quality individuals passionate about their work. The HSBC Management displays a great vision regarding our future as an organization, as well as individuals.

I first learned about HSBC when as a teenager I would read my father's copy of Time magazine. As a kid I wasn't really sure what career path I wanted and my options ranged from Air Force to medicine! But by the time I was in university, banking in Pakistan was experiencing a phenomenal growth and when I graduated I had decided to join the industry, and conveniently enough HSBC was starting its first Management Trainee programme that year. As an MT, there are lots of expectations from you, mainly that you will deliver excellent results and be flexible enough to work in any area of management. One of the really nice aspects of being an MT is you get the chance to meet people in almost all areas of the bank during your rotations. I went from NSC to Treasury, and made great friends along the way with whom I still keep in touch even after two years. Also the bond that you develop with your fellow MTs is very unique.
I am now a Product Manager and am responsible for key deliverables that contribute towards the P&L of the bank and that alone gives a great sense of ownership. There will always be highs and lows in one's career but the experience has been outstanding with great support and guidance from my line managers and colleagues. Needless to say, I made the right decision to join HSBC.
